How to Install Memory in Toshiba Satellite Laptop Computer

Adding Random Access Memory (RAM) is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to improve the performance of your Toshiba laptop. You can determine what kind of RAM you need by looking at the RAM chips already installed or going to Toshibas website and entering your model number into its search engine. Different programs and operating systems determine how much RAM you should be using, so determine how much youll need for your unique requirements.

Instructions

Things Youll Need:

• Toshiba Laptop
• Laptop RAM (SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 in appropriate speeds and amounts)
• Screwdriver

Installing RAM on your Toshiba Sattelite

1. Step 1

   Flip your laptop so the lid faces the ground. Remove the screws on the back of the case that holds your memory. It will be easily identifiable, as a symbol that looks like a RAM chip will be on it.

2. Step 2

   Remove the battery by releasing the battery lock and sliding the battery out.

3. Step 3

   Uncase the existing memory from the motherboard by pushing outward on the metal arms that hold the RAM in place.

4. Step 4

   Insert the new RAM. The stick has a groove in it and the place it goes into has a plastic piece sticking out. Line these up and slowly insert the stick into place until you hear or feel it snap into place. Do not force the issue, instead attempt to realign it until it fits, as you can damage the RAM and the motherboard by using too much pressure.

5. Step 5

   Put the cover back on the RAM area and screw it back in, then replace the battery.

6. Step 6

   Boot to Windows or your BIOS and determine if the system is recognizing the memory youve just installed.

Computers are designed to be interoperable, meaning you should be able to share your files and network between Macs and Windows PCs without much difficulty. However, problems can still arise from the network, networking method or issues with either operating system.

The Facts

1. Macintosh OS X can automatically recognize and read from networked hard drives shared by the Windows operating system. In some cases, you may not be able to write to those drives from a Macintosh (depending upon the formatting method used when the drive was initialized). Windows computers can read and write to shared Macintosh drives if they are shared using either SMB (server message block) or FTP (file transfer protocol); drives shared via AFP (AppleShare file protocol) are usually not available to Windows computers.

Bonjour Autoconfigure

2. Bonjour (previously called Rendezvous) is an automatic protocol that allows networked computers to advertise which services they make available to other computers. It is installed by default on Mac OS X, and an optional install on Windows. Two computers running Bonjour should automatically appear as available on each others network utilities, such as a network drive selection box.

Resolving Network Issues

3. If the computers are not automatically visible to each other, open the Internet preferences on each computer to determine its IP (Internet protocol) address. This is located in System Preferences > Network on Mac OS X, and Network > Properties on Vista. You may be able to connect the computers by telling one to open the IP address of the other; for example, connect to a Mac sharing a drive by FTP at 10.0.0.3 by entering "ftp://10.0.0.3" in a network or Web browser. If the two IP numbers are completely different (i.e., 10.0.0.3 and 192.168.0.2), they are running on different networks, so check your network connections and turn off any network interfaces you are not using.

4. An easy way to solve problems is to try doing the same thing in the reverse direction: if your Windows drive wont appear on your Mac, try sharing the Mac drive and opening it on Windows.

Try the Internet or "SneakerNet"

5. Finally, many local network problems can be solved by using the Internet to send files, or by physically transferring a USB drive from one computer to another. (This is nicknamed "SneakerNet" for the act of walking from one computer to another.) Network utilities such as DropBox provide an easy way for two computers to share files.

How to Share a Printer Through WiFi

Home networks are becoming more common. These networks can be wired, wireless or a combination of both. Accessing one printer from any of the computers on a network is easily accomplished, and it doesnt matter if your network is wired or wireless.

Instructions

1. Step 1

   Install the printer on one of the computers on the network according to the manufacturers instructions.

2. Step 2

   Open the "Printers and Faxes" folder by clicking on "Start," "Control Panel" and "Printers and Faxes."

3. Step 3

   Right-click on the appropriate printer in the "Printers and Faxes" folder and select "Sharing."

4. Step 4

   Click the "Sharing" tab in the dialog box that comes up.

5. Step 5

   Click on "Share this Printer." Enter a name for the printer in the space provided. Click on "Apply" and then click "OK."

6. Step 6

   Go to another computer on the network and open the "Printers and Faxes" folder. Double-click on "Add Printer" and click "Next."

7. Step 7

   In the"Add Printer" wizard select "A network printer" and then click "Next."

8. Step 8

   In the "Add Printer" wizard dialog select "Browse for Printer" and then click "Next." This will bring up a list of shared printers on the network.

9. Step 9

   Select the printer that was just installed and click "Next." When asked if you would like to make this the default printer, select "Yes" if this is the only printer on the network or if it is the printer you will use most often, then click "Next." If you do not have the driver for the printer on your computer and both computers have the same operating system, then the driver will be automatically installed on the new computer. If not, then follow the manufacturers instructions to install the driver.

10. Step 10

    Click on "Next." When asked if a test page is wanted, click "Yes" and let the printer print a test page to ensure that all is working properly.
