How to Repair a Color Printer

Color printers allow you to print everything from plain business documents to richly colored family photos right from the comfort of your own home. Even the best printers, however, can start to malfunction. The printer itself could be broken or it could simply be a technical bug that you can repair in a few hours or less. Knowing what to look for and how to fix it will save you time and money and ensure that you dont pay for extra repairs that you dont need.

Things Youll Need:

• Ink cartridges
• Printer installation CD

1. Step 1

   Check that the wires are plugged in properly or that the printer is connected to the computer through a wireless network . Turn the power off and back on and make sure the light isnt flashing.

2. Step 2

   Open the printer, with the power on, and make sure the ink cartridge holders are not blogged or stuck. They should slide over into view after the power has been turned on. If they are stuck, they may need to be replaced.

3. Step 3

   Check the ink cartridges and replace them if they seem to be empty or are old. The ink may have dried up and blocked the rest of the ink from flowing out. Set the cartridges aside and run a test print with the new ink cartridges. If the printer still doesnt function, keep the old cartridges and try them again when the printer is fixed.

4. Step 4

   Uninstall the printer from the computer and reinstall using the CD or by downloading the software from the manufacturers website. This may fix any problems with communication between the printer and the computer.

5. Step 5

   Test the printer using only a black and white print instead of color. There may be a problem with only the color cartridge, in which case the ink cartridge may need to be replaced. If this works, try using only the color cartridge to see if there is a problem with the black ink.

How to Share a Printer Through WiFi

Home networks are becoming more common. These networks can be wired, wireless or a combination of both. Accessing one printer from any of the computers on a network is easily accomplished, and it doesnt matter if your network is wired or wireless.

Instructions

1. Step 1

   Install the printer on one of the computers on the network according to the manufacturers instructions.

2. Step 2

   Open the "Printers and Faxes" folder by clicking on "Start," "Control Panel" and "Printers and Faxes."

3. Step 3

   Right-click on the appropriate printer in the "Printers and Faxes" folder and select "Sharing."

4. Step 4

   Click the "Sharing" tab in the dialog box that comes up.

5. Step 5

   Click on "Share this Printer." Enter a name for the printer in the space provided. Click on "Apply" and then click "OK."

6. Step 6

   Go to another computer on the network and open the "Printers and Faxes" folder. Double-click on "Add Printer" and click "Next."

7. Step 7

   In the"Add Printer" wizard select "A network printer" and then click "Next."

8. Step 8

   In the "Add Printer" wizard dialog select "Browse for Printer" and then click "Next." This will bring up a list of shared printers on the network.

9. Step 9

   Select the printer that was just installed and click "Next." When asked if you would like to make this the default printer, select "Yes" if this is the only printer on the network or if it is the printer you will use most often, then click "Next." If you do not have the driver for the printer on your computer and both computers have the same operating system, then the driver will be automatically installed on the new computer. If not, then follow the manufacturers instructions to install the driver.

10. Step 10

    Click on "Next." When asked if a test page is wanted, click "Yes" and let the printer print a test page to ensure that all is working properly.
